Call for Papers: GREATLEAP Sessions at the European Society for Historical Demography Conference

We invite submissions for two exciting sessions we will propose for the upcoming European Society for Historical Demography (ESHD) Conference:
1. Unravelling inequalities in health using individual-level causes of death
This session explores historical dimensions of health inequalities, focusing on the social, economic, and environmental factors that have shaped disparities in health outcomes across populations using individual-level causes-of death data. We welcome papers addressing topics such as:

  • Historical trends in health disparities across social strata.
  • Methodological innovations in analyzing historical cause-of-death data.
  • Determinants of specific causes-of-death
2. From source to data: automatic source transcription
This session delves into the transformative potential of automated transcription technologies in historical demography. We encourage submissions that discuss:

  • Case studies on the application of automatic transcription tools in (historical demographic) research.
  • Challenges and opportunities in digitizing and processing historical records.
  • Evaluations of accuracy and bias in machine-generated transcriptions
If you are interested in participating, please email Tim Riswick (organiser) at tim.riswick@ru.nl with your proposal for approval (Deadline 25 January 2025). After receiving confirmation, submit your application through the ESHD submission portal.
We anticipate that our Action will be able to provide a couple of ITC Conference Grants and/or Dissemination Conference Grants to scholars who are selected to present but lack the financial means to attend otherwise.
We look forward to your contributions to these timely and innovative discussions!
