Summer Training School: ‘Micro-Census Insights into Historical Households, Mortality and Fertility’

The European Society of Historical Demography (ESHD) and the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure (Campop), University of Cambridge, invite applications for the 2026 advanced summer course “Micro-Census Insights into Historical Households, Mortality and Fertility.”

This intensive programme introduces participants to analytical approaches using micro-census data. Combining theoretical lectures with hands-on practical sessions, the course offers the opportunity to work with census datasets from diverse countries and time periods (including UK samples and IPUMS USA & International). Participants will engage with quantitative, spatial, and indirect estimation methods to investigate patterns in historical mortality, health, fertility, marriage, and migration.
Course Structure
  • Theoretical lectures on historical demography
  • Census data management and variable creation
  • Methods taught: indirect estimation, regression analysis, spatial regression
  • Introduction to census record linkage
  • Practical sessions using R
Who Should Apply
The course is intended for:
  • PhD students
  • Recent PhD graduates
  • Master’s students with relevant experience
Applicants should have prior experience working with demographic (individual-level) datasets and quantitative analysis using STATA or R.

  • Financial support: A limited number of travel and accommodation grants and fee waivers are available.
